Crazy 6 (GMBC 6 Hour) Story
See the previous post for some pictures from the race, or stay with this one to read about it.
As most of you will know by know, yesterday Geelong MTB club held it's 6 hour race at the You Yangs MTB park as part of the Vic Enduro series. The You Yangs park is about half way between Melbourne and Geelong and has some of the best riding around Melbourne.
After a week of cold weather and rain, Sunday turned out to be almost perfect weather for racing. And the loose gravely surface that the You Yangs is so well known for usually improves after some rain so it was looking like good conditions for some good racing.
With a sighting lap out of the way to check out some of the new sections of trail it was time to start, right on time to which was nice. I managed to get myself into the lead off the start and extend on it along with Jimmy Maebus up the first single track climb. By the end of the lap I had a clear lead thanks to a little lay down by James, and then it was over to Scott. Over the next few laps we built up a lead of around 3 minutes while Felt Racing #2 of Mark and Josh were doing battle for 2nd and 3rd with a couple of other teams. It wasn't until later in the race that things started to change. Scott broke a chain which needed fixing, helped out by Joel Read from Specialized (who were in 2nd place) who gave Scott a power link to get him going again, very sporting, thanks Joel. This dropped us out of the lead and into 3rd, about 50m behind team number 2. With about an hour and a half to go it was going to be a race to the line between the two Felt teams. In the end it was team #1 getting the better of team #2.
Despite the hiccup it was a great race, the Felt Virtue Team bikes are just made for the type of riding that the You Yangs offers, and what is on offer is really worth the drive out there. Thanks to GMBC for another great race.
See you all at Chase The Sun this Sunday.
