Gippsland tour day 5 "Finale stage".
Stage 9. Paynesville criterium.
Paynesville was a great location to finish at. It was sunny, not too windy and on the edges of a picturesque lake. Unfortunately for me, a cold had been slowly taking hold and had moved into my chest. I warmed up and tried to decide what was best. I decided racing wasn’t in my health’s best interests and a good result wasn’t likely. With the main focus of this year (the tour of Timor) starting in three weeks I thought it was wise to sit it out. A hard decision but I think the right one.
It was good to watch; close, fast paced and exciting racing with everyone trying to take out the final stage. There were several crashes that claimed many riders but Scott and Luke stayed out of trouble, with Scott riding very close to the front for almost the entire race. He attacked a few times but not surprisingly didn’t get much of a break before being reeled in. The fast pace ensured no one was getting away for a sneaky victory. In the end Leigh Howard took it out (again!) and it was all over!
It was disappointing not to finish but a good experience nevertheless, full of highs and lows with plenty of memorable moments. Scott had a nightmare start to the tour but got better towards the end, particularly in the crits. With luck, this race should get us into racing form for the Tour de Timor starting on the 24th of August and also the final round of chase the sun, next weekend.
Thanks for reading and we hope you enjoyed it! If these 4000 words leave you begging for more, or perhaps were just too much to get through, SBS will have an hour long segment on the Gippsland tour on Sunday, 16th of August at 12:00. Maybe you will catch a glimpse of Scotty and I in action!
