With a damm warm night last night, Jack and I headed once again to the
Dirt Crits under the Westgate. Having done the Deluxe crits earlier in the week, Jack could be forgiven for groaning when one J.Maebus (who has finally updated his blog- pity he rides another brand...)turned up, but I have no excuse! After waiting for what seemed like eternity in the soft sand on the start line, we got on with matters and headed for the picnic table turn around that denotes the start of pain! By the time we make it back to the start line at full noise, the hurt screws are getting a tickle and you know its on from then. Jack got a flyer as usual and was leading going into the first *climb* and drove the front of the field away from the pack of chasers.
By the start of the second lap, there was a serious wedge plunked into A grade, and everyone had forgotten the usual things - what lap were we on, and the fact that this was a handicap. Typical for us :) So the pace was very warm on the front end whilst the early race ego battles went on, and before it settled down, I gave it away and dropped back to see Jack and we rolled the last few laps before I snuck in a little gap on the last lap and rolled in for 3rd on the line, naturally forgetting it was a handicap- I had the money for 3rd already spent on a magazine for the flight today, only to be reminded about the handicap. Bugger...
So that was the race - results can be seen here, but they aren't much chop, so perhaps just have a look at these photos instead. The photographer has done an excellent job here, very impressive.
And finally, in some excitement last night, the crit course claimed another victim, this unfortunate fellow peeling his knee open in corner the where the above photos were taken. An ambulance was summoned, and when it finally arrived, they couldn't get access to the gentleman and so they subsequently summoned the Fire Brigade and they came and chopped down some fences to get the stretcher nice and close. What a saga! It was a bit unnerving riding past a bloke whose knee could talk each lap, but he had plenty of company, so a few stitches should see Humpty Dumpty peddlin' again!
HDATO is still rocking this weekend, with forecasts of hot temperatures for the weekend making management critical to finishing. Felt Racing will be fielding a 3 man team this weekend, head to head against some stacked teams, so its looking to be a great race! Check back for the full story and some pics, so hopefully we can add some colour to this site!! :)
