It Won't Be Wet, It'll Be Tacky

Sunday I was planning on having a nice relaxing ride along the Yarra trails, but the buckets and buckets of rain we had over the week end made the couch and TV look like a much more inviting option, that was until some crazy boy in pink, AKA Sam Bach suggested a MTB ride in the Dandenongs down this track he knows of. When I queried the mud content of this track I was told that it never really gets muddy because it is steep enough for the water to just run off it! Sounded simple enough to me at the time, so I put some Barracuda tires on the mud/training hardtail and off we went up into the hills.

On the trip in the car I was informed of Sams life insurance details and who I should speak too just incase, this made me a little bit nervous.

At the top of the hill it was 8 degrees, it was raining and the wind was howling, perfect weather for a nice Sunday ride.

The start of the trail, if you think it looks steep in this photo try standing at the top of it and hearing "It gets steep in a little bit!".

The water was certainly running off the side of the hill, but it was still very very slippery.

This little "trickle" grew much bigger as the ride went on and the rain came down.

The heat from the almost constant braking as we came down the hill was drying the mud on the brake rotors and callipers.

We came across a sad looking bike in a tree, can you pick the odd one out?

So after one run down the hill we walked up to have another go at it which was a little bit easier after and fun seeing what I was up against. In a short while we had found our way to the bottom again. We were already soaking wet so we went exploring for some more trails which we found hiding under some rather large puddles, and then it was time to go. We left the bikes hidden down the bottom of the hill to make the walk up to the top a bit easier, which turned out to be a good choice as the walk, sans bike, took 27 minutes! I don't know what DH riders are thinking! All in all it was a fun ride for a wet Sunday afternoon, it sure did make the hot shower afterwards nice.
