XC at the You Yangs
Yesterday was the third round of the state XC series at the You Yangs run by GMBC. I had made the decision to make the trek out to this race because it's such a great place to ride and is always a good track, I wasn't disappointed. The track had a bit more fire road than usual but it included some of the new trails that have been build recently which was good.
Off the start I was able to get myself into second place up the first climb behind Murray Spink. For those who know me and my riding style second place up a climb is an unusual position for me to be in. I was able to hold the wheel and attacked along with Adrian Jackson at the top of the first descent. The gap we had at the bottom was quickly reeled in by Spink up the following fire road climb but we all finished the lap together. I couldn't hold on for the next climb and settled into my own little race in 4th place which I was able to hold until my legs decided to stop playing the game I wanted them to play on the 4th of 6 laps. I lost a few places in the last laps as the climbs started to hurt more and more, but the descents combined with the 130mm travel of the Virtue Team made sure I still had oodles of fun on every lap. I even managed to keep the air in my tires and the rubber side down which seemed to be a challenge for some.
The night before a couple of silly people (read Rohin and Tory) had the bright idea of going to a ride after the race. While sitting on the couch in front of the TV this sounded like a great way of getting a few extra kms of riding done and what better place to do it? We were all pretty smashed after the race but after a bit of a rest and some food off we went over the hill to cut a lap of the flat track. Luckily the pace was very relaxed and it turned out to be a good little ride, with plenty of stops (look out for the extra greenery in places next time you're out there) and finished down the black diamond XC run with it's rather large but extremely enjoyable wooden berms.
Don't forget that the HDATO is up next week in Eildon, hope to see you all up there in your finest suits for a good race.
