Better late than never...
I've been a little tardy with the updates I'll admit. I've also had a few people on my case to keep up to date so here goes.
Thursday as always (well, 49 weeks of the year) is Dirt Crit night and it was a great night. The wind had been up for a few days, the rain stayed away, and the course was rock hard and primed. From the weeks' mudbath the previous week, there was a lot of ruts to be found around the course, but a few laps in, the edges had worn off and the track was super fast.
With the new course configuration in full effect, a little hotdog style loop and a tricky slow speed corner making it different for the regular suspects, the race was started and A grade charged accross the grass paddock and into the night. I opened 'er up for a while before Jack took over on the head of the bunch and we wound it out for the first lap.
By then end of the first lap, Felt Racing was p1 and p2 and a small gap had started to open. With that in mind, I hopped back on the front of our group of 2 and we proceeded to give it for another lap to prise open that gap and give ourselves the best chance to keep it a race of two whilst we met the traffic. With Jack on Pythons and myself on Pirahna's, we both employed a different riding style in certain places, and it was an interesting little bit of testing with neither getting the upper hand. Both tyres worked exceptionally well in the dry, being both quick as a whip, and amazingly predicatable in the high speed 'drifty' corners.
With a few little tests of each others legs, one of my little attacks opened a gap, and realising this I kicked for a while and then snuck into the (lapped) traffic sequences that we know and love, and from then on it was really a case of staying consistant and watching the gaps.
By the end of the race, the gap had blown out to a minute, with the realisation that Jack couldn't bridge back up, he was content for second place. In all, a good little race, and with 66 riders turning up, some creative course construction mixing it up for the riders, and eliminating the chaotic sprint finish, it all bodes well for the summer of racing. Results as always can be found here and racing will be back next week! Come on down and see what its all about. Its the perfect prepartion for the upcoming Subaru Interactive @ Docklands Werribee 12 hour Race
And finally, a road race post from the Modella Road Handicap can be found at Ash's Blog, Jason Jackson is on the bike and turning the pedals in anger, and Paul Van Der Ploeg is home from the worlds looking foward to a strong showing at the 12 hour in a few weeks!
Till next time, happy trails!
